Uncoated cotton canvas: for individual work.
An already pre-primed canvas saves the artist a work step, so that he can start painting directly after purchase. However, if you need a special primer or want to work without one at all, you are better off with an uncoated canvas made of cotton. The material is available from us on large rolls, so you can cut the cloth yourself in the appropriate size. You can also easily make the stretcher frame needed to stretch the canvas with our stretcher frame strips in your desired size - for an all-round individual work.
Cotton canvas for priming
Our canvas Nature Cotton consists of one hundred percent pure cotton. It forms a strong basis for an individually produced and primed as desired, covered stretcher frame. Since the canvas is uncoated, you can prime it yourself to match your work exactly. Or you can use the painting base entirely without primer to incorporate the structure and color of the material into your work. In any case, the high-quality fabric of the canvas made of cotton with its strong structure is suitable for paintings in any format.
How to use the uncoated cotton canvas
The uncoated canvas of cotton allows you to make your own desired priming in a free choice of colors. After all, not every artist prefers a light primer, but may want to elicit unexpected luminosity from the colors with a dark background. A greenish primer, on the other hand, has been popular since the Renaissance for portraits to soften red hues.
But even on unprimed canvas can be painted with the appropriate colors, acrylic paints are best suited for this. The uncoated canvas made of cotton thus gives the picture a special effect, which is especially suitable for landscape painting or abstract compositions. The natural hue of the canvas can thus be directly incorporated into the work. The natural fabric also works as a contrast to delicately painted flowers. Thus, the canvas offers the artist many opportunities for experimental work.
Cotton: a traditional fabric for canvases
From history painting to impressionism to abstract modernism - canvases made of cotton have been a preferred painting ground for artists for many eras. And for good reasons, because the material is:
- very flexible
- comparatively free of distortion
Due to a different weight per square meter and different structures, canvases made of cotton are also very versatile, whether uncoated or already provided with a primer.
